At abnormal., wellbeing and health is at the core of what we do. We’ve created a product that helps people get through the stresses of work, safe in the knowledge that they’ve had a nutritionally balanced meal, even under tight time restraints and tough diaries.
After a testing 18 months of health uncertainty and job insecurity, we wanted to look into the habits and daily routine of workers, in order to delve deeper into how UK workforces currently feel in their positions and determine the unhealthiest careers.
We put forward a set of questions to 22 common industries in the UK.
After the survey was complete, we were able to total the scored points in order to determine the unhealthiest industry for each – and some of the results were surprising.
A third (33%) of people working in recruitment and HR say they feel “stressed and overworked all of the time”.
8% of hospitality workers are skipping their lunch five times per week.
Working in leisure, sport or tourism is extremely full-on, with 31% of staff claiming they never get to go for a walk or leave their work space during their working day.
Shockingly, just 1% of construction and property workers have “never had to take time off for mental or physical health issues".
Sadly, 37% of recruitment and HR staff revealed that their workplace “isn’t supportive at all” in a stressful situation.
And finally, when asked if they have a good work-life balance, 34% of people in business said they “always have to take their work home with them”.
Accumulating the points tally for each table unveiled that, perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly, that teachers and lecturers officially have the unhealthiest careers, after scoring highly throughout. 80% of those working in education claimed they’ve had to take time off work for mental or physical illnesses, and 21% said they always have to take their work home with them.
In close joint second, almost all construction and property workers (99%) have had to take time off work for injuries, the highest percentage out of all industries. Whilst employees in recruitment and HR top the leader board for being stressed, with a third (33%) admitting that they are always overworked.
Those working in science and pharmaceuticals have proven to be the healthiest industry, as it scored lowest in the report. 38% of scientists and pharmacists claim they don’t feel stressed and overworked and almost half (44%) maintain they never skip lunch.
Working in fitness and beauty is also deemed less demanding, with a third of staff (33%) revealing that they get to go for a walk every day, and 58% say that their workplace is supportive in stressful situations.
2,000 workers were surveyed for the study.
